All of a sudden my M715 is my daily driver!
I've got an insane commute to the office. I've resigned myself to the fact that I'm just plain stupid to attempt it for the amount of money they pay me. Who but an idiot would drive 126-miles each way through San Diego and Los Angeles rush hour traffic? Depending on what I drive I can actually spend more money on fuel commuting into work than I earn in a day.
At the moment I own 8 vehicles. Not the most I've had at one time, but all but one of them runs and drives - until recently that is. Usually my commuter of choice is my '99 XJ. However, as you can read elsewhere in these blogs it's down with a blown engine. My '48 CJ-2A sits waiting for restoration, although I can start it and move it around. My '48 Willys pickup (Murderous Overkill) is still waiting on the engine to be finished and dyno'd. The orange '53 flattie has a top speed of about 65mph at 3700rpm. Not the stuff of high mileage commuting. The '97 TJ is down for a tranny and axle swap at the moment. My wife has the Durango. The 350 Chevy in the '68 M715 burns 1 quart of oil every 7.5 miles. It's one of the biggest 2-stroke engines you'll find on the highway.
That leaves my '89 460-powered F-250 as my commuter. Naturally I chipped' it and added some other go fast goodies so I've got to run Super Unleaded. (remember, I'm stupid) Nothing like filling up with 38 gallons of high test at 2.94/gallon. Friday morning after the 4:00am wakeup to make it to the office by 7:30 I pulled into a gas station a few miles from the office to top off both tanks. Over $100 later, as I'm pulling out onto LaCienega Blvd. the engine dies. I instinctively reach for the tank selector toggle and switch to the rear tank. The engine fires back to life and continues on for another mile. Then - poof - nothing.
I could diagnose and fix it but I'm not going to. I hate that truck. The thing I'm most upset about is all that fuel I've now got to siphen out of the tanks. Time to pull the injected 460, C6, and t-case, add aluminum heads, a rowdy cam, and a 4bbl and stick it all in a J2000.
All of a sudden my M715 is my daily driver. Time to hurry up and finish the TJ.
