There is no better way to wake up then out in the desert being serenaded by the roar of the engines of the Blue Angles...
We pick back up on my story at the beginning of Day 2 of our 5 Day trip in a Deuce.
After eating breakfast and loading up the truck we set off our first day of wheeling, and one long day of wheeling at that. We started the day off right with a romp in the sand, where we learned the Deuces do not like to climb dunes and that hard drive based video cameras don't like to ride in Deuces while recording and will spontaneously corrupt. (fun I know) We then set off, through the whoops, back to the highway. After spending a grand total of about 3 minutes on the highway we were back in the dirt again. We proceeded to cover about 30miles on a dirt road. The road is a maintained/graded access road for the rail roads so it wasn't too hard of a ride. Being out in front and out of the dust added to the enjoyment on blasting down this road near the Deuces top speed. We then picked up the highway again, for about another 10 minutes.
After we got off of the highway we stopped for lunch under some shade trees about 500 yards from Mexico border and about 5 miles from the Arizona border, if that gives you an idea of where we were. After lunch we set off down an old frontage road. This is where the Deuce started to conquer. The tore up broken down old road made for one rough ride in the old Deuce and took its toll on my old back. Most complaints I have heard have been about the hard seat, but for me it was more the chaffing of my back from rubbing against the metal seat back that got irritating.
After fueling up (not that we needed to) we again headed into the dirt, this time down a not so maintained dirt road heading up to the hills of a So Cal recreation area. This is where the Deuce really shined! Ok, so maybe it was more driver than vehicle but whatever it was the thing handled well. Cappa manhandled that thing like it was on rails through the slalom course of whoops, wash outs and pot holes. A quality set of shocks would have helped out a ton.
After a friendly visit from a bored BLM officer and a good nights sleep we woke up to a full dress rehearsal show from the world famous Blue Angels! Let me tell you, it was quite the sight to see. Some may not thing anything of this, but I know that I certainly thought it was cool! Once the show was over and the trucks were loaded up we were again on our way!
Tune in next week for the conclusion of my tale of "5 Days in a Deuce" where the deuce continues to wreak havoc on my body and our sanity.
*Since I'm sure you have had enought of the Deuce by now, here are more of the Blue Angeles!
