Murderous Overkill on the Radar

I've been pulling together the parts I need to sling the drivetrain into Murderous Overkill.  Here's the new Stak 3-speed Monster Box being uncrated.

The Stak arrived at the office over a month ago, but every time I showed up to bring it home in my pickup it started raining cats and dogs.  Even though it's way over-crated in a nice wooden box, I didn't want to have it sitting back there getting soaked for the 130-mile drive home.

It's finally here, as is the Dick Miller SFI flex plate I bought for the Olds 455.  Now I've just got to get my hands on a Moroso drag boat oil pan for the 455 and I can get to slinging the drivetrain into the chassis.

Of course, before I do that I've got to go get some scrap steel to build a chassis stand to level out the thing so it's not sitting on the springs.  That way I'll be sure the angles are all right with no settling of the springs to throw stuff off.  I'm off to my metal supply place today.  More later....

1. So why didnt the 502 go into murderous overkill? And not to be a dick but I dont think a bomb could hurt that t-case.

2. Because Plan A was to quick and dirty throw it together with parts I had on hand - and an Olds 455 was one of those parts. A Ram Jet 502 would've been nice, but my Olds makes more hp and torque with a carburetor - and waaaay more with a little blast of nitrous.

There's an update coming in the May '08 issue of Jp explaining the hold ups and going a little into why the drivetrain/suspension/etc are going in the direction they're going.

3. I do really like the 455 after reading about it. I also really like the suspension set up that you went with. Cant wait to read more about it in future issues.

4. Thanks for those comments, but I've probably spent a full hour just staring at the front frame/suspension section and realizing how much suspension travel, engine setback, and clearance compromises I'm making just to keep the stock frame rails. There's a pretty strong chance I'm gonna cut the front frame off in front of the firewall and build my own. I'll probably 3-link it with a panhard bar.

And lately I've been toying with junking the solid axle idea and building a crazy A-arm front suspension using a GM 1-ton IFS centersection and some CVs. Or maybe whang together something using full size Bronco type J-arms and a TTB setup.

Eh, bench racing will make you crazy.

5. Its a good crazy. I like the idea of scrapping the front frame rails because it will look better with all tubes and give you better engine placment options. The only reason I dont like the independent option is that it will probably take longer to build than Cappas juggy.

6. don't we all just get way too involved in our projects. If we'd just keep to our original simple plans we'd be out playing in the dirt. Our knuckles would'nt be near as banged up either.

The throw it together "rat rod" is looking better and better. Especially for though's of us with excess parts taking up storage space.
