A while ago I posted some photochopped images of different step ideas I had for the high clearance rocker guards I was planning to make for my XJ. Well, the XJ got tapped to go to Easter Jeep Safari this year, so the rocker project got bumped up. Now we are debating around the office if it is worth writing a story on it or not.
Here is the under side of them so you can see how I tied it back into the framerail.
I cut the stock sheet metal rockers out, and welded in 2x4, 3/16 wall tube, with 1.25 inch, .188 wall tube going back to the frame. Now I can high-lift jack the XJ up from the side with no problems at all. The rectangle tube runs from fenderwell to fenderwell, and I modified how the front fender gets bolted on to work with it..
The tubular step is 1.5 inch, .120 wall tube as are the standoffs which should keep trees and other junk away from my doors, and the dimple died steps make it easier for me to load excess crap up on the roof, when I've got the inside of the XJ filled (which happens more frequently than I'd like to admit)
I ended up with something I think looks decent and will ensure my doors open and close for as long as I have this XJ. By cutting out the stock rockers and welding in new, I lost no ground clearance, which on this stock height XJ is huge.
So, do you the reader want to see a 2-page story of exactly how this was done, or is this blog good enough?
