Ok, so we sneak into Four Wheeler's Top Truck Challenge...We had to, there are three Jeeps competing! So here are our predictions for who has a chance and who may go bust. So we'll start with the Jeeps.
Jeff Wood from Las Cruces, New Mexico looks like he has a good shot with his Cummins-powered '66 CJ-5. He's had a couple years of seat time in this rig as it sits today so most of the bugs are likely worked out. It's relatively small, comparatively light, virtually bomb-proof, and manuverable. His main drawback could be the lack of wheelspeed with the Cummins 3.9L.
Byron Hair and his '77 Wagoneer hail from Spanish Fork, Utah. The FSJ is extremely simple and heavy-duty. However, removing the 54-inch tires that were on the Jeep and replacing them with smaller grooved 46-inch Mickey Thompson Baja Claws may prove to be a mistake. It also had a leaky steering system. Not sure that was fixed.
This Willys wagon was a last minute entry. He's from Sylmar, California and built the thing for less than $7,000. It's really pretty simple and built with easy-to-get inexpensive parts. That build may help or hurt. The carburated engine and backyard fabwork could be a problem if the 49s and axlewrap gets the best of the leaf springs and drive shafts.
Here are the other rigs. Who do you think will win?
