Fitting 40s

Ok, so 40's are not really on everyone's wish list. But ever since more road-worthy versions of the 40-incher have surfaced who can blame us for trying to fit them on everything.

I just got done slapping the Hell Creek 4-inch lift springs onto the the front of my '73 J-truck. I bolted on one of my Juggy Goodyear MT/R 40-inch tires just to see how it would fit. Well, I think it would if I cut the factory flares off. But for now, I'm kinda leaning toward some 37s...or maybe some 39-inch Boggers! Well, back to work. I gotta flip the rear shackles, and it looks like the exhaust is in the way. Wish me luck.

3. Do the "Conehead" cut like you did on the Panel. That was sweet.

By the way, nice rocker dent. Is it a requirement that all your FSJs have that?

5. YEAH, hack those things off! thats what I did to my cherokee and Im able to stuff 35" under w/no lift as of yet, but I do plan on lifting...would you be able to takes aome pics of the rr shackle flip sos I can see how its done? PLEASEEEEEE!

6. Super easy to flip the shackles on a post-mount rear suspension FSJ in most cases. Remove the shocks and jack up the Jeep by the frame. This is usually perfect to unload the rear suspension enough to use a pry bar to pull the shackles down to the under position. You don't even have to pull them off to flip them. Super easy. Second time this has worked for me. Of course if your Jeep has rubber bushings you should at least loosen the shackle bolts. Mine has bronze bushings so I didn't bother. Then all that's left is to install longer shocks and check the pinion angle. It's good for about 3 inches of lift or so. The simple flip only works on early post-mount FSJs. Others ('74 and older) will require some fabrication.

9. Hey John, hows the J coming along? havent been here for awhile and was wondering...mine still in progress as I got a new job and a house w/a garage so Im now going to start w/the engine to see if I can repair or replace...
