I've been in CA now for 4 years and it was only this past week I got to go on the Rubicon. Sure I walked most of it taking pictures, but when I did ride, I jumped in this nice clean red show Jeep owned by Tony of Gen-Right.
The thing with covering events is that it is hard for us to drive our own Jeeps and get the pictures we need to get, so often I ride passenger with someone so I can jump out whenever I feel the need and shoot some pictures.
I figured Tony was a nice guy, I heard him talking to people about taking it easy, the Rubicon is a long trail and it can bite you if you aren't on top of it. Sure this Jeep has been to Las Cruces, the Hammers, Johnson Valley, Shredder Canyon and the like, but with the u
nobtanium paint job I figured it was a ride that wouldn't be beat on enough to damage it.
You see, every event I see the Jeep at, Tony has just gotten done dusting it with his California duster and polishing it with some Quick Detailer. He even dusts off the rock-eaten rims. I figured a guy who treats his Jeep like that (and this trip was no exception) would be safe to ride with.
Well, a particular confluence of events led to this. Here is Tony and his spotter Brian just after the flop that destroyed the pretty candy-apple red paint.
I saw a lot of stuff on this trip that might not make for a whole story, but I sure have a lot of pictures to share, so look forward to a lot more Rubicon trip related blogs this week and tune in to the November issue of JP Magazine for more about this flop and the 56th annual Jeepers Jamboree.
