My New Favorite Tool

Burning Metal

I have a new favorite tool. In the past I would usually cut metal with a sawzall, angle grinder, or a torch.

Cutting 3/8 single pass

Today I used a Miller Spectrum 375 X-Treme plasma cutter and I'm in love. Removing brackets from my new-to-me frame was way easier than the first one where I used a torch mostly. The plasma cutter gouges out welds way better than a torch and doesn't overheat the surrounding material. It's kind of like hosing mud off with a pressure washer, only on a smaller scale and it's metal. In most cases I am even able to save and reuse brackets like spring perches, shock mounts and so on because I don't end up blowing holes through them like I would with a torch. It's saving me a lot of time. I also like that it's really compact and it runs off of compressed air instead of expensive gases. Plus it can be plugged into 110 or 220! I've been hooked up to 220 and can cut up to 3/8-inch steel plate in a single pass. It's hard to believe such a small plasma cutter can do that!
