Today's specimen is a '76 CJ5 with a tailgate. Those of you without CJ5s might be saying so what. Well, most of the AMC era CJ5s didn't get a tailgate at all. I'm told it was optional, and many just didn't want it. When I had my '78, that was the case, and I went so far as to buy a Kaiser-era tailgate to put on mine... however with a terminal case of cancer, the project never got off the ground.
I ran across this CJ5 with a tailgate... and while it might not be the cleanest job I've seen, it has a few cool qualities that would make this setup better than the CJ tailgate swap. And, even if you CJ5 guy don't go ahead and put this tailgate in, there are ideas here for whatever tailgate you do end up swapping in.
The latches require no chains... no additional rattling from the chain hitting the body or from the tailgate slopping around. Also, there is no need to push on the tailgate with your closest friend just to get the chains to go home. The latches are basic hardware store latches, and the lock down on the body is very CJ7-ish. Chains retain the tailgate.
The tailgate itself has angle around the perimeter. It looks like it was done for water repellancy, but the added bonus is that no tools will roll off the tailgate when parked at angles.
So, there you go, if you are planning on building your own tailgate, here's a few ideas.
