Tire Bomb!

Firestone String Cheese

Remember all those Firestone tires that delaminated and caused all those accidents? Well, I've got one of em!

I just bought a '89 YJ and amongst disgusting potoato chips, hairclips, and dog hair that adorned the interior of the Jeep, there was a tire sitting on the back seat.

If you remember back a couple years ago, there was a string of crashed involving mostly Ford vehicles that came equipped with Firestone tires. The tires would delaminate, sending the SUVs wearing them rolling off the road. A huge recall on the tires and a lawsuit between customers, Ford, and Firestone ensued and things got ugly for a while.

Apparently, my '89 was once shod with the problematic Firestone ATX radials 'cause as soon as I took out the tire I noticed the delamination process had begun. On one side of the tire there's a strip of rubber where the tread meets the sidewall that has already peeled away. On the other side is the telltale crack running around the circumference. Had the chick I bought this Jeep from kept driving on this tire it's a sure bet the whole tread would've come peeling off. Lucky her.
