All my hobbies are too expensive.
Last month my boat wouldn't start in the middle of Lake Havasu. I let it drift into a nice sandy beach, dropped anchor, and tried to trouble shoot it for a little while while the wife and kids swam and played.
After an hour or so of testing fuel pressure, sensors, etc. I just couldn't get any spark to the plugs. I called for a $390 tow and that was that.
My job is about working on and building Jeeps, not tinkering on my boat, so rather than go whole hog trying to diagnose a pesky wiring gremlin myself I dropped it off at my Mastercraft dealer. I figured my time was worth more than the aggrivation of trying to fix the boat myself.
I was wrong. They've had the boat for 5 weeks now. I've had to constantly call and hold their hand through this ordeal. "Did you try the CPS sensors, how about the ECM pins, etc, etc, etc." About a week ago, and after much prodding from myself, they finally called with a diagnosis of a $1,300 Ignition Control Module. "Fix it" I said, then went back to work on the Jeep.
After not hearing from them for another week I called, only to find out they still can't get the boat to fire with the new ICM. Jeez. I could have fixed it myself by throwing all new parts at the damn thing. I brought it to them so it could be efficiently diagnosed, saving me time, money, and aggravation. Wrong again. I don't think these guys could find their azz with both hands, a map, and a team of Sherpas. So next time you complain about working on your Jeep, remember it could be worse. You could have a boat.
