There are four different kinds of axle shafts found in early Jeeps. The Tracta type, Rzeppa type, Bendix type, and the Spicer or U-joint type. Up till now I've never owned a Jeep axle with a Bendix joint. And interestingly enough, I'm yanking this one out.
My hot rod Jeep doesn't need front axle shafts so I pulled them out. On one side I found a common U-jointed axleshaft and a banged up inner knuckle. It looks like the previous shaft failed at some point in time and was replaced. On the other side I found a Bendix axle shaft. It's a pretty goofy-looking joint that's kind of a cross between a Rzeppa joint and a Tracta joint. Anyway, after cleaning up the housing a little, I found some tags on the knuckles that said "Bendix Joint". They looked kinda cool so I put the tags back on when I reassembled the knuckles. Anyway, click HERE to see what all four different axleshafts look like. Strength wise, the Spicer style shaft is strongest, the Rzeppa #2, the Bendix #3, and the Tracta is likely the weakest.
