Mating the oddballs

Swapping Driveline

I rummaged through my old driveshafts to look for one that would fit my hot rod Jeep. I found one but it seemed a little long and had 1310 U-joints at both ends. It came from the front of my old flatfender so that should explain all the granite striping and dings. It originally connected my Spicer 18 transfer case to a narrowed Dana 44 front axle that came from a Blazer. Anyway, I needed a 1350 U-joint at one end. No biggie, that's why they make conversion U-joints.

There are all kinds of different conversion U-joints available. However, I usually try to avoid using them for strength reasons, but this is a low power application and the truth of the matter is that even a 1310 U-joint would likely be overkill. I measured out the distance between the Ford 9-inch and SM420 again and found that I could just get the shaft to squeak in there. If the Jeep had a lot of suspension travel it wouldn't, but I'm only working with about 3-4 inches of suspension movement. So I went down to the local parts store and picked up a 1310 to 1350 conversion joint, slapped it in, replaced the broken zirk fitting on the slip joint, bolted it in, and greased all the fittings. I wish all my jobs were this easy.
