Dang Screws

Busted Parts and Tools

Its been a while since I really had a decent wood project, sure I built  a few shelves when I moved into this place, but they went together ok.  This shelf kicked my butt today.  Stripped screws, a broken phillips head, a busted drill bit and more.  Its finally framed, but I had it for the day.

Maybe its me.  I've destroyed a total of 4 number 2 Phillips bits today.  Three that strip a screwhead on contact, and one that just exploded on me.  I busted the drill bit I had dug up to help with the screw stripping issue, and I think I've destroyed just as many screws as I put in.  And, probably more than half the ones that are in are also destroyed.

I don't remember these projects going this poorly.  For some reason I thought I liked working with wood, its a clean dirt compared to grease and gear oil, and makes for a nice change of pace.

1. try useing soap on your screws before inserting them.......seriously, it helps them go in easier

2. Don't use Phillips! You can get these square headed deck screws that sorta look like Phillips but go in and out without stripping much, much easier.

3. I used to swear by the square head screws, but the ones I got out here had more problems than Phillips did....

Soap. I forgot that trick. Thanks.

5. Had the same problem putting shelves in the room with the loom. Predrilled holes. Soap. But the beams were petrified. Soap helped, some. Still think the screws are soft.

6. I finished the dang shelf up with some fancy outdoor coated screws I still had to screw down the plywood, and every one went in fine, with the bit that I suspected was stripped from the other mess.

Like 40 screws, not one stripped or broken.

I'm wondering if its a screw issue. Like, the non-coated screws from home depot are too cheesy to go in.
