Finally got to do a proper mileage run on my 151K mile YJ. Now this isn't my first 4-cylinder Wrangler, but it is my first Jeep with a Throttle Body Injection (TBI). The results suprised me. (Photo taken on day of purchase)
My Jeep came factory with 205/75R15 tires according to the label in the glove box. A quick GPS check of the speedo revealed that it reads 7-percent slower, confirming the new P235/75R15 tires are 7-percent taller. On my run from San Diego through the mountains, over some desert trails, then back up over the mountains and back into San Diego I turned the speedo 215.5 miles, which equates to 230.55 miles actual. I filled the tank with 12.0 gallons of regular unleaded for an actual 19.21 mpg.
That's pretty amazing to me considering the steep mountains and the fact that on the way home I was pushing the little 2.5L as hard as was safely feasable. And contrary to popular belief, the little Jeep actually had enough power to keep from bogging down on the steep grades. Credit that to the 235 tires. Any more sidewall height and I think it would've been wheezing.
I don't know. The more I drive this little sucker the harder the thought of butchering it and modding the hell out of it becomes. I know that once I add armor and a winch, a lift and a better cage, etc it's gonna suck the power (and fun) from the little engine and the thought of the V-8 swap will be easier to live with. But for now it's a lot like driving a VW Beetle. Lots of fun for pennies on the mile.
