Last year I re-powered my M-715 with a 290hp GM Performance Parts 350 crate engine. It's basically a GM Goodwrench 4 bolt main engine that GM slaps a 350hp 222/222 @ .050 cam in. The cam is all wrong for the engine's 8.5:1 advertised compression, which really spec's out to something more like 8.0:1. I can easily get it up to about 375 or 385 hp, but cracking the magic 400hp mark without digging into the short block is gonna be tough. I've been scanning the Comp Cams catalog for some unusual cam selections that I think will get the job done with an affordable set of Vortec iron heads. Why should you care? Because the Goodwrench short block GMPP uses for its 290hp/350 crate engine is pretty much the same as any '70s or '80s Chevy 350 you'll find in the junkyard for $75. Which means that if my combo comes up roses you'll be able to duplicate my 400hp/400lb-ft engine for well under $2,000 if you start with a junkyard engine.
