How hot is too hot?

Just the other day I was telling Cappa how hot the XJ was running, and how I thought it was too hot. Well, coming home today I shattered all the numbers I was worried about the other day.

I think today is the hottest I've ever been driving the XJ. While in town running some errands, the temp gauge read 119 degrees. That's just hot.

its hot out

So while driving up the hill to get back home, I decided I might want to keep an eye on things, so I fired up the Intellistick software on the phone to watch engine oil temp, and the DashDAQ to get actual numbers about coolant. It is about a 1500 foot climb from town along the 16-mile canyon road to get home and I did it at an average ambient of 107.

Here's what I had:

Coolant temp- 230 degrees. Max-237 degrees

Engine oil temp- 255 degrees. Max- 267 degrees

Intake air tep- 151 degrees

I don't have a trans temp gauge in there yet, and that info isn't on the bus anywhere, so I shot the pan with an infrared thermometer and came up with 266 degrees for the AW-4. I read somewhere that the max operating temp for these is supposed to be 174.

I've got 221,000 miles on the Jeep, and by the time I got to the top of the hill, my oil pressure was down to 20 at 55mph. The trans is already slipping, and I'm left wondering how hot is too hot?
