FSJ Fuel Fixing

Cherokee Chief Repairs

I took the recent Thanksgiving holiday closure of our offices as an opportunity to finally stem all fuel leaks from my '78 Cherokee...I think.

Over the summer I installed a polyethylene replacement fuel tank from MTS because the factory side-saddle tank had a hole in it that epoxy wouldn't seal. I thought I could finally fill the new 21-gallon tank to capacity without leaking half the fuel all over the place. Wrong. Turns out the 3/4-inch breather hose that runs from the tank next to the filler hose was dry-rotted and cracked. Every time I accelerated or went up a hill, raw fuel poured out until the tank was at half-capacity.

Since I became Editor, a funny thing happened. I have almost no time for wrenching anymore. That'll change as our production schedule settles down a bit in the coming months, but it took from about August 'till this week for me to get enough spare time to run to the parts store for 4 feet of 3/4-inch  fuel vapor hose and get it installed. I haven't made it to the gas station to fill it up, but hopefully with the new tank at full capacity I'll have a 210-mile range in this thing (yeah, it gets about 8-10 mpg as far as I can tell).

I'd look into getting the aftermarket 25-gallon axillary tank hooked back up and working, but the brake proportioning valve just started leaking and the front brakes aren't really grabbing. Once I get the brakes all fixed I'll get back into the aux. fuel system to make this thing a long-range driver...assuming the engine doesn't go boom.
