Wrangler Family Wagon

Five-Seat Grocery-Getter

I've got three kids and a full schedule. I've often wondered how a four-door JK Wrangler would work as my primary family vehicle. So far, so good!

Like many larger families out there, I've got to fit three small kids in car seats in the back of my vehicles, lug strollers, baseball and soccer gear, grab groceries, home supplies, and no end of other errands. Normally I use my Cummins Megacab pickup, my wife's '04 Durango, or my '78 Cherokee Chief to get the job done. But this week I'm been making a point to use only my loaner '12 JK Wrangler. So far, here's my report.

  1. The rear seats are a bit shallow, but my kids' car seats don't overhang
  2. You can get to the rear seatbelts even with an infant carseat strapped in the center and booster seats on the outer seats
  3. There's enough rear legroom for my (tall for his age) 7-year old, but the little guys can't climb in by themselves
  4. A full-size stroller fits in the rear, but that's about all you'll carry back there unless you stand it up on its side
  5. The front and rear door "pocket cargo netting" needs to hold more
  6. My whole family wants me to buy one
  7. Carpet-delete and vinyl seat surfaces needs to be an option
  8. It holds a full-week-whack of groceries with room to spare - including a 100-count box of diapers.
  9. It's crazy-easy to park and very maneuverable
  10. The rear headrests need to be adjustable or removable
  11. The Pentastar V-6/W5A580 drivetrain combo is super-livable even with 3.21 gearing; I'm really loving the drivetrain in this thing
  12. I'm getting an honest 23 mpg at 70mph on the freeway (hand-calculated) and 17.5 mpg in mixed in-town driving with lots of idling time with the A/C on
  13. The stereo system needs better speakers - bass sound sucks
  14. I can't imagine swapping out the efficient, powerful 3.6L for a V-8
  15. The front seats need adjustable lumbar support if you're going to sit in them for more than 40 minutes.
  16. The rear rubber cargo mat is a great thing to have if your kids are into sports
  17. A full-size cooler, folding chairs, baseball bag, and soccer gear fit behind the back seat
